- Advice on Feeding
Devising a suitable diet for your dog is not difficult if you follow
a few basic principles, savs Chris."Variety is really important.
I strongly believe that there is no such thing as a 'balanced meal',
and attempting to provide all the necessary nutrients in one meal
- particularly if it has undergone some form of processing - can
actually lead to some of them becoming unavailable to the dog, so
he is unable to benefit from them.
"Balance is something which happens over a penod of time, and
is achieved by ensuring there is plenty of variety in what is eaten.
Provided each meal is quite different, this is not something you
need to be anxious about and your dog should be fine.
"Preparing his meals allows you to provide a considerable variety
of foods, rather than being limited only to what a manufacturer
has chosen. Dogs are adapted to thrive on a wide range of different
foods, but what is not 'normal' for them is to eat cooked, processed
foods of one type only.
"Owners often think of dogs as carnivorous, but they are much
more of an omnivore and scavenger, so variety in the diet should
include not just meat, bones and offal, but a selection of other
foods, such as fruit and vegetables. The bigger variety of ingredients
you can provided, the better."
