Case Study Patient 2 : Eight-month-old German Shepherd pup, Lucy.

History : Lucy had always seemed stiff on her front legs. Then, recently, she had been unwilling to go out for walks and was intermittently lame on both front legs.

Clinical examination : This revealed a significant reduction in the mobility of both elbow joints. The joints were swollen and painful, and Lucy found straightening them very difficult.

Further investigation : X-rays of both elbows were taken and revealed bilateral ununited anconeal processes with very severe secondary DJD.

Treatment : Surgery was needed to remove both anconeal processes; treatment with anti-inflammatory painkillers was instituted; a controlled exercise regime was advised.

Outcome : One year on, Lucy is doing well on small amounts of regular exercise (over-exercise makes her lame). While her owners are very happy with her quality of life, they have to accept that the DJD in her elbow joints will cause her more problems in the future.
